Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the welfare of the poor and underprivileged has remained at the centre of India’s transformation over the past 12 years, highlighting a range of social welfare initiatives launched by his government since 2014.

Marking the completion of the second year of his third consecutive term in office, Modi said programmes such as Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Swachh Bharat Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and Ayushman Bharat were aimed at improving the lives of disadvantaged sections of society.

“Over the last 12 years, India has witnessed many transformations and at the core of these changes is the welfare of the poor and downtrodden,” Modi said in a post on X.

The prime minister said his government’s approach had been guided by the principle of “Antyodaya”, aimed at ensuring that the benefits of development reach those who had remained on the margins for decades.

He said technology had played a key role in improving service delivery and enhancing the quality of life for beneficiaries.

According to Modi, digital platforms and the Direct Benefit Transfer system have enabled government support to reach people directly, reducing leakages and improving transparency.

“This has reduced leakages, improved efficiency and strengthened trust in governance,” he said, adding that the government’s welfare initiatives had evolved into a broader movement for human empowerment and the goal of building a developed India.

Modi was sworn in for a third consecutive term as prime minister on June 9, 2024, following the National Democratic Alliance’s victory in the 2024 general election.

He first assumed office on May 26, 2014, and began his second term on May 30, 2019.
