Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday urged residents to use the annual Amarnath pilgrimage as an opportunity to strengthen communal harmony and project Kashmir’s tradition of hospitality.

Speaking during a visit to Sonamarg, Mufti said pilgrims and tourists should leave the region with positive experiences and share those impressions across the country.

She said Kashmir’s culture of welcoming visitors could help counter prejudice and mistrust at a time of heightened social and political polarisation.

Mufti also called on authorities to improve facilities and services for visitors and expressed concern about administrative procedures affecting local businesses dependent on the pilgrimage season.

The People’s Democratic Party leader opposed a proposed cable car project in Sonamarg, arguing that it could adversely affect livelihoods linked to tourism.

The Amarnath Yatra is one of India’s largest annual religious events and plays a significant role in the economy of several communities across Kashmir.
