Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth will be the next Chief of the Army Staff and will assume office on June 30 upon the retirement of General Upendra Dwivedi, India’s Defence Ministry said on Saturday.

Seth is currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff.

Commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986 after graduating from the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, Seth has served for nearly four decades in a range of operational and strategic appointments.

His command assignments include leading an armoured regiment in the desert sector, an armoured brigade in the western theatre and a counter-insurgency formation in Jammu and Kashmir.

As a Lieutenant General, he commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Indian Army’s strike formations, before serving as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area.

He later headed both the South Western Command and Southern Command, becoming one of the few officers to command two operational army commands.

The ministry said Seth has also held several senior staff appointments that contributed to operational planning, force management and military modernisation.
