Banihal, June 12
Two men died on Friday after their car skidded off a road and plunged into a stream near the Levra forest area along the Banihal-Neel road in Ramban district, officials said.
Rescue teams, police personnel, and local volunteers rushed to the scene and launched an operation to retrieve the occupants from the severely damaged vehicle.
Officials said the car suffered extensive damage after falling into the stream, making rescue efforts difficult as the occupants were trapped inside the wreckage.
One of the victims was declared dead at the scene, while the second was evacuated and taken towards Sub-District Hospital Banihal but succumbed to his injuries before reaching the medical facility, officials said.
The deceased were identified as Amir Ahmed, son of Muhammad Shafi Chopan, and Zeeshan Wani, son of Abdul Latief Wani, both residents of the Batoo Neel area of Ramsoo tehsil in Ramban district.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
Road accidents are common on the mountainous roads of Ramban district, where steep slopes, narrow stretches and difficult terrain often complicate rescue operations during emergencies.
