Heavy showers threaten flash floods

Rain and thunderstorms swept parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, with the meteorological department forecasting continued wet weather through Aug. 17 and warning of heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Jammu division and Kashmir over the next three days.

South Kashmir recorded most of the rainfall during the 24 hours to Saturday morning. Kokernag received 11 mm, Qazigund 8.6 mm and Pahalgam 5.5 mm. Srinagar recorded 1.6 mm and Gulmarg 0.8 mm.

The rainfall brought daytime temperatures below normal across Kashmir.

Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 26.1 degrees Celsius, 3.8 degrees below normal. Qazigund recorded 22.6 degrees, 5.4 degrees below normal, while Pahalgam’s maximum of 20 degrees was 5.7 degrees below normal.

Kokernag recorded 22 degrees, 5.5 degrees below normal, while Gulmarg recorded 18.4 degrees, 2.3 degrees below normal.

Jammu division also received moderate rainfall. Batote recorded 18.4 mm, Banihal 16 mm, Bhaderwah 13.6 mm, Katra 7 mm and Jammu 4 mm during the same period.

The meteorological department forecast light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places between August 9 and August 11, with brief intense showers possible at some locations.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall was expected in several districts of Jammu division, while intense showers were possible in parts of Kashmir.

“Torrential rain and brief intense heavy showers may generate flash floods and landslides at vulnerable places and cause waterlogging in low-lying areas,” the department warned.

Residents were advised to avoid streams, landslide-prone areas and other vulnerable locations during periods of intense rainfall. Authorities were asked to maintain heightened vigilance and monitor areas at risk.

The department forecast that light rain and thundershowers would remain possible at many places between August 12 and August 17, with brief intense spells at some locations, suggesting that the wet conditions could persist across the region.
