The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has directed advocates’ clerks to follow the prescribed dress code and wear identification badges to access the court Registry.

An order issued by the Registrar Judicial in Srinagar on Monday expressed concern over clerks entering court premises in informal clothing.

The court said these violations undermined institutional discipline and could allow unauthorised individuals to pose as advocates’ clerks and engage in touting.

The order refers to Circular No 17, issued on February 17, 2005, which prescribed uniforms on the recommendation of the Bar Association and with the approval of the Chief Justice.

The directions were reiterated in a circular dated May 10, 2024.

Under the prescribed summer uniform, clerks must wear navy-blue shirts and trousers.

The winter uniform consists of a grey coat, navy-blue trousers and a navy-blue shirt or jersey.

Clerks must also display identification badges on the left side of their chest, showing their names and those of the advocates they work for.

The court warned that violations would be viewed seriously and could invite disciplinary action.

The relevant authorities have been directed to ensure strict compliance.
