Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday and stressed the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, while reiterating India’s longstanding position that regional disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

The telephone conversation came amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia, with Pezeshkian briefing Modi on recent developments in the region and the way forward, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Modi welcomed what the government described as progress in diplomatic efforts and underscored the need for continued engagement to achieve lasting peace and stability.

He also emphasised that uninterrupted navigation and commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remained critical for India and the wider international community, given the strategic waterway’s central role in global energy supplies and trade.

“The Prime Minister welcomed the understanding reached and reiterated India’s consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

Modi later said in a post on social media that he had expressed hope that ongoing negotiations would contribute to durable peace in the region while reaffirming the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation through the Hormuz Strait.

India has consistently advocated de-escalation and diplomatic engagement in West Asia, where recurring conflicts have raised concerns over energy security and disruptions to international shipping lanes.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints, carrying a substantial share of global crude oil exports. Any disruption to shipping through the passage has the potential to affect international energy markets and countries heavily dependent on imported oil, including India.
