Footsteps of Faith

Ashura is a living expression of faith, resilience and collective memory.

Across Kashmir, solemn Ashura processions transformed streets into spaces of remembrance, where faith, sacrifice, and centuries-old tradition converge. Aasif Bashir sends a visual story.

Every year on the 10th of Muharram, thousands of mourners take to the streets across Kashmir to commemorate Ashura, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

Dressed in black, participants join solemn processions carrying alams (standards), reciting elegies and performing matam (ritual chest-beating) in remembrance of Imam Hussain (AS)’s stand against injustice and oppression. Families and volunteers line the routes, offering water and refreshments – a symbolic tribute to the thirst endured at Karbala.

The processions, held under coordinated security and community arrangements, are among the most significant religious observances for Kashmir’s Shia Muslim community. They draw people of all ages, reflecting a tradition passed down through generations.

Beyond the rituals, Ashura is a living expression of faith, resilience and collective memory. Through every prayer, procession and act of service, the story of Karbala continues to resonate, reminding mourners of the enduring values of sacrifice, compassion and moral courage.
