National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah has directed senior party leader Ali Mohammad Sagar to continue as the party’s general secretary, reversing an organisational change announced earlier this week.

The order, issued on Friday and signed by Farooq Abdullah, said Sagar would continue to function as general secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference until further orders.

The decision comes three days after six-time MLA Mubarik Gul was appointed to the position following Sagar’s induction into the Jammu and Kashmir cabinet.

Gul’s appointment had come amid protests by his supporters at the party headquarters in Srinagar over his exclusion from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s expanded cabinet.

The latest order also follows a meeting of legislators at the Srinagar residence of NC MLA Qaysar Jamsheed Lone on Friday.

Gul was among the legislators who attended the gathering, which included 17 NC MLAs and an independent lawmaker from Thanamandi.

The meeting took place amid reported dissatisfaction within the party over ministerial appointments and the functioning of the government.

The order retaining Sagar did not specify the reasons for the decision or clarify Gul’s future organisational position.

Sagar, a senior NC leader, was among four legislators inducted into the Council of Ministers during the October 27 cabinet expansion.

The latest development comes as the party faces pressure to address internal differences following the reshuffle and growing criticism from some of its senior legislators.
