The ruling National Conference (NC) appointed senior leader Mubarik Gul as its general secretary on Tuesday after his supporters protested his exclusion from Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s expanded cabinet.
The supporters staged a demonstration at the party’s Nawa-e-Subh headquarters in Srinagar during a meeting chaired by NC president Farooq Abdullah, raising slogans in Gul’s favour.
They said the six-time legislator from Eidgah deserved a cabinet post because of his seniority and experience.
They also said his name had appeared on a proposed ministerial list until late Monday night before being removed, though the reason was unclear.
Gul has previously voiced disappointment over repeated exclusions, saying he had attended nearly 30 oath-taking ceremonies without being made a minister.
He has represented Eidgah in the Assembly in 1983, 1996, 2002, 2008, 2014, and 2024.
Farooq Abdullah subsequently appointed him general secretary of the party organisation.
