The University of Kashmir on Sunday flagged off a 50-member student contingent that will travel to New Delhi to receive the National Championship Award in the 17th National Youth Parliament Competition (2025-26), marking one of the institution’s most significant achievements in a national academic and leadership event.

The students will be honoured at Parliament House after securing the national title in the competition, which promotes awareness of parliamentary democracy, constitutional values and legislative processes among university students across India.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by senior university officials, faculty members, students and parents, who congratulated the team before it departed for the national award ceremony.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Nilofer Khan described the achievement as recognition of the students’ academic excellence, leadership and commitment to democratic values.

She said the honour reflected the intellectual capabilities of students from Jammu and Kashmir and demonstrated their ability to compete successfully on national platforms.

“The recognition at Parliament House is not merely an award but an affirmation of our students’ vision, intellect and confidence to contribute meaningfully to the country’s future,” Khan said in a message issued on the occasion.

Registrar Professor Naseer Iqbal said the championship reflected the University’s culture of discipline, perseverance and academic excellence, adding that the students’ success would inspire future generations to pursue leadership roles and public service.

He also acknowledged the contribution of the team’s mentor, whose guidance, he said, had played a key role in the students’ national success.

The contingent was formally flagged off by Controller of Examinations Professor Majid Zaman in the presence of Dean Students’ Welfare Professor Seema Singh, Dean of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Professor Pervez Ahmad, Chief Proctor Professor Imtiyaz Ahmed and other university officials.

Addressing the gathering, Zaman said the national recognition was a matter of pride not only for the University of Kashmir but for the entire Union Territory, adding that the honour reflected the students’ dedication, discipline and academic standards.

Singh described the achievement as a milestone in the University’s academic journey, saying participation in the Youth Parliament programme had enabled students to demonstrate leadership qualities, confidence and a commitment to democratic principles.

Prof Pervez Ahmad said the Youth Parliament initiative provided students with a deeper understanding of democratic institutions, constitutional governance and public policy while encouraging informed civic participation.

The National Youth Parliament Competition is organised to familiarise students with parliamentary procedures, legislative debates and democratic decision-making, while encouraging informed participation in public affairs.

University officials expressed confidence that the team would represent the institution with distinction during the award ceremony at Parliament House, adding that the national championship further strengthens the University’s record in academic and co-curricular competitions.
