Srinagar, July 5

A motorcyclist died, and his pillion rider was injured after their motorcycle collided with a passenger bus in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Sunday, police said.

The accident occurred in the Chawalgam area when a motorcycle collided with a bus travelling along the route, leaving both riders with serious injuries, officials said.

The injured men were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the motorcyclist was declared dead on arrival.

The pillion rider is undergoing treatment at District Hospital Kulgam, they said.

Police identified the deceased as Bashir Ahmad Sheikh, son of Ghulam Ahmad Sheikh of Chawalgam.

The injured man was identified as Javid Ahmad Laway, son of Aziz Ahmad Laway of the same area.

Officials said the bus and the motorcycle were involved in a head-on collision, although the circumstances leading to the accident were not immediately clear.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, including whether factors such as speed, road conditions or driver negligence contributed to the accident.

Road accidents remain a recurring concern in Jammu and Kashmir, where narrow roads, difficult terrain, heavy traffic and occasional violations of traffic regulations frequently contribute to fatal collisions.

Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists to observe traffic rules and exercise caution, particularly on busy district roads.
