Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that India had made significant progress in improving access to affordable healthcare during the past 12 years through flagship welfare programmes and expansion of medical infrastructure.

In a series of posts on the social media platform X, Modi highlighted initiatives including Ayushman Bharat, the government’s health insurance programme, and the PM Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana, which provides low-cost generic medicines.

“Over the last 12 years, India has worked to make quality healthcare more affordable and accessible,” Modi said.

He said Ayushman Bharat had become the world’s largest healthcare programme, providing health coverage to millions of economically vulnerable citizens.

The prime minister also said government intervention had reduced the cost of medical devices such as cardiac stents and knee implants, lowering treatment expenses for patients.

Modi added that expansion of medical colleges and increased availability of seats had improved access to medical education across the country.

The remarks came as the government highlighted achievements in the healthcare sector under the banner of “12 Years of Swasth Bharat”, focusing on insurance coverage, pharmaceutical affordability and healthcare infrastructure.
