For 90 minutes and four more beyond that, Portugal and Croatia traded punches like heavyweights refusing to yield. Every attack seemed to demand an answer. Every twist invited another. By the time the final whistle sounded, Portugal had escaped with a dramatic 2-1 victory, thanks to Gonçalo Ramos’ stoppage-time winner that capped one of the most gripping contests of the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage.
If the ending belonged to Ramos, the evening was equally defined by Cristiano Ronaldo’s enduring brilliance.
At 41, the Portugal captain continued to defy football’s calendar, calmly converting a second-half penalty to become the oldest player ever to score in a FIFA World Cup knockout match. It was his 11th World Cup goal – and remarkably, his first in the tournament’s knockout rounds – a milestone that kept Portugal alive before Ramos supplied the decisive finish.
The reward is a mouth-watering Round of 16 clash with neighbours Spain in Dallas.
Portugal had looked the more dangerous side from the opening whistle. Rafael Leão repeatedly tore through Croatia’s defence with his pace, creating Portugal’s first clear opportunity inside four minutes when Bruno Fernandes was denied by goalkeeper Dominik Livaković before Josip Šutalo blocked the rebound.
Pedro Neto was equally menacing down the opposite flank. One teasing delivery narrowly escaped Ronaldo’s forehead, while another sparked panic inside Croatia’s penalty area before Leão volleyed over from close range.
For all Portugal’s attacking promise, Croatia remained composed – and ruthlessly efficient.
Eight minutes after halftime, Nikola Vlašić and Josip Stanišić combined neatly on the right before the latter’s pinpoint cross found Ivan Perišić arriving unmarked at the far post. The veteran winger made no mistake, driving his finish beyond Diogo Costa to hand Croatia a deserved 1-0 advantage.
Croatia nearly doubled their lead moments later when Igor Matanović bundled home from another Vlašić delivery, only for the offside flag to rescue Portugal.
That warning jolted Roberto Martínez’s side into life.
Leão crashed an effort against the crossbar before Ronaldo thought he had produced a trademark finish after expertly controlling a lofted pass, only to discover he had drifted marginally offside.
The equaliser finally arrived in the 68th minute after a VAR review spotted Nikola Vlašić pulling Renato Veiga inside the penalty area during a corner. Ronaldo stepped forward and, with characteristic composure, sent Livaković the wrong way to level the contest.
Momentum swung wildly thereafter.
Croatia refused to retreat. Mateo Kovačić twice forced outstanding saves from Costa, the first pushing a thunderous long-range strike onto the post before the Portuguese goalkeeper denied him again minutes later. Matanović was also thwarted by Costa’s sprawling intervention, while Petar Sučić had another Croatian goal ruled out for offside.
The drama was far from over.
Deep into stoppage time, Leão delivered one final burst down the left before whipping an inviting cross into the six-yard box. Ramos rose above the Croatian defence to thunder a header into the net in the 94th minute, igniting wild celebrations among Portugal’s players and coaching staff.
Croatia believed they had snatched an instant equaliser when Joško Gvardiol tapped home after Mario Pašalić’s square pass. Yet another VAR review brought another cruel verdict: offside.
Only then could Portugal finally celebrate.
It was a victory built on resilience as much as quality. Croatia had threatened repeatedly and came within inches of extending the contest, but Portugal’s blend of youthful energy and veteran leadership ultimately proved decisive.
Leão’s relentless running stretched Croatia throughout, Costa produced several match-saving stops, Ronaldo delivered another landmark performance on football’s biggest stage, and Ramos supplied the decisive touch when it mattered most.
In a tournament already filled with drama, Toronto produced another classic.
Portugal now move on. Spain await. And with Ronaldo still making history and Ramos providing the finishing touch, belief inside the Seleção has rarely felt stronger.
