Police have filed a chargesheet alleging that an assassination attempt on three-time chief minister Farooq Abdullah in March was premeditated and carried out with the intention of killing.
The more than 600-page charge sheet was submitted before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Jammu on Friday against Kamal Singh Jamwal, who is currently lodged in District Jail Ambphalla.
According to the charge sheet, Jamwal allegedly harboured deep resentment against Abdullah, whom he blamed for the rise of militancy in Kashmir and the displacement of Kashmiri migrants, including the loss of their homes and property.
Police said the accused had allegedly been planning for nearly two decades to target Abdullah.
“His action was not sudden but a pre-meditated one,” the charge sheet said, adding that the accused came to the venue “with the specific intention to target the former chief minister”.
Investigators alleged that the firing attempt was deliberate and not accidental.
Police said the incident occurred on March 11, 2026, at the Royal Park banquet hall in Greater Kailash, Jammu, where Abdullah was attending a wedding function alongside political leaders and other dignitaries.
According to investigators, as Abdullah was leaving the venue around 10:10 p.m., Jamwal allegedly brandished a revolver and attempted to fire at close range. Police personnel assigned to Abdullah’s security overpowered the accused before the attempt could succeed, officials said.
A case was registered at Gangyal police station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act, 1959.
On March 14, Bhim Sen Tuti constituted a seven-member Special Investigation Team to probe the case under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of the Jammu-Samba-Kathua range.
Police said the investigation included searches, witness statements and seizure of electronic and physical evidence, including the revolver, empty and live cartridges, mobile phones, CCTV footage, digital video recorder material and handwritten documents.
The seized material was sent for ballistic, forensic, handwriting and electronic examination, and the resulting reports were included in the charge sheet, police said.
Investigators alleged that Jamwal had carried a loaded revolver to the venue and waited for an opportunity to attack Abdullah.
During questioning and in comments to the media, the accused repeatedly claimed he had been preparing for years to target Abdullah over personal grievances, according to police.
Abdullah has denied any prior knowledge of the accused or the alleged motives behind the attack.
“I don’t know that man… Neither I know him nor aware about his antecedents,” Abdullah had earlier told reporters.
