Union Home Minister Amit Shah would chair a high-level meeting in New Delhi on Sunday to review the country’s preparedness for floods and heatwave conditions, the government said in a statement.

The meeting will assess the readiness of central agencies and examine measures related to early warning systems, resource deployment and coordination among departments to minimise loss of life and property during natural disasters.

According to the statement, the review reflects the government’s “Whole of the Government” and “Whole of Society” approach to disaster management under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said disaster management mechanisms had been strengthened in recent years through improved coordination between central and state authorities, expansion of the National Disaster Response Force and a continued emphasis on a “zero casualty” approach during natural calamities.

The meeting will also review progress on long-term flood mitigation measures, including protection of critical infrastructure, river management initiatives and advances in forecasting systems.

Officials said Shah would assess the implementation of decisions taken during last year’s review meeting to ensure accountability and coordinated execution of disaster management plans.

The key focus areas of the meeting include improving flood forecasting and early warning systems through advanced technology and real-time data integration, strengthening preparedness for simultaneous disasters such as floods and heatwaves, expanding community awareness programmes and ensuring adequate stocks of relief materials and medical supplies.
