Senior Indian Police Service officer M K Sinha took charge as Additional Director General of Police (CID), Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday and reviewed the department’s functioning, including its intelligence-related work.
Sinha succeeds Nitish Kumar, who has been transferred as ADG Armed Police J&K.
Soon after taking charge, Sinha met senior CID headquarters officers and was briefed on the functioning of different wings and ongoing work, officials said.
A 1996-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, Sinha was previously ADG Headquarters at J&K Police Headquarters, a post he had held since May 2021.
He was also given additional charge of the Security Service Group in 2023.
His appointment followed a reshuffle of 14 senior IPS and Jammu and Kashmir Police Service officers ordered by the Home Department on August 27.
Nitish Kumar, a 1999-batch IPS officer, was transferred from ADG CID and Director of the State Investigation Agency to ADG Armed Police J&K.
Sinha has held several field and headquarters assignments in Jammu and Kashmir, including SDPO Samba, SSP Border Jammu, SSP Jammu, SSP Rajouri, SSP Vigilance Jammu and SSP Kathua.
He later served as DIG Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban Range and DIG Rajouri-Poonch Range before becoming IGP Jammu Zone in December 2018.
He subsequently served as IGP Crime, J&K, before taking up the ADG Headquarters assignment.
Sinha has also served on central deputation with the Cabinet Secretariat.
He is a graduate of the National Defence College and received a gold medal for the best thesis during the course.
He was empanelled in 2024 for ADG-level posts at the Centre.
As CID chief, Sinha will oversee the police department responsible for intelligence gathering and analysis, as well as coordination with other security and law-enforcement agencies.
The CID also works on internal security matters, counter-terrorism investigations and assessment of emerging security threats.
