Srinagar, Aug 28
Anti-terror operations remain the top priority of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone Sujit Kumar said on Friday during his first field visit after taking charge.
Kumar reviewed security and inter-agency coordination in Srinagar, including arrangements around the Hazratbal shrine, where large crowds were expected for Friday prayers following Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi.
“Operations were the priority in the past, and they remain the priority today as well,” Kumar told reporters.
He said several operations had been conducted in Kashmir in recent days and that significant recoveries had been made.
His comments came after a series of joint operations involving J&K Police, the Army and Central Armed Police Forces in Shopian, Pulwama, Sopore and Kulgam. Officials have reported arrests and recoveries of weapons, grenades, ammunition, an improvised explosive device and other material.
Kumar, a 2007-batch AGMUT cadre officer, assumed charge on Thursday evening after being transferred from the post of IGP Security, J&K.
He succeeded V K Birdi, who has gone on central deputation.
On Friday, Kumar inspected security arrangements at Hazratbal and other areas of Srinagar where large congregations were expected.
He said the visit was intended to assess coordination among police and other security agencies and the arrangements at high-footfall locations.
“We seek your cooperation,” Kumar said, referring to the inconvenience caused by security restrictions during large gatherings.
He assured residents that the zonal police remained available to them.
Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat had earlier directed enhanced security arrangements at major religious sites, particularly Hazratbal, ahead of Eid-e-Milad and the following Friday prayers.
Kumar has previously served as DIG Central Kashmir and DIG CID and has experience in counter-insurgency, law-and-order management and dealing with militant networks in the Valley.
