An infiltration attempt was foiled along the Line of Control in north Kashmir’s Keran sector early on Saturday, triggering an exchange of fire near Jumgund village, the Army said.
Troops detected suspicious movement in the area at around 3 a.m. and challenged the suspected infiltrators, leading to a brief exchange of fire, according to the account provided by the Army.
Search and sanitisation operations continued through the day, with additional troops deployed to comb the area and check for any further presence of infiltrators.
The Army said the suspected infiltrators had attempted to enter the Kashmir Valley under cover of darkness. It did not immediately provide details of casualties or the number of people involved.
The Keran sector, in Kupwara district, is a sensitive stretch of the LoC and has previously been used as an infiltration route.
Security forces maintain surveillance and anti-infiltration measures across forward areas of Kupwara, Baramulla and Bandipora districts.
The incident comes days after four militants, including a Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, were killed in a mine blast in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch while allegedly attempting to cross the LoC, according to the supplied report.
