Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat on Friday chaired a high-level security review ahead of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage, directing police and security agencies to maintain close coordination and strengthen surveillance to ensure the safe conduct of one of India’s largest religious pilgrimages.
The meeting, held at the Police Control Room in Srinagar, brought together senior officers from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Army, Central Armed Police Forces, intelligence agencies, and civil administration to review operational preparedness for the pilgrimage, which begins next week.
Officials briefed the police chief on deployment plans, security arrangements at vulnerable locations, traffic management, convoy movement, and emergency response mechanisms along the pilgrimage routes.
Prabhat instructed officers to maintain a robust security grid through coordinated operations involving the Army, paramilitary forces, intelligence agencies, and police.
He emphasised comprehensive area domination, intensified anti-sabotage checks, strict access control at sensitive locations, and greater use of surveillance technology to monitor the twin routes leading to the Amarnath cave shrine.
The police chief also directed officers to strengthen quick response capabilities, maintain uninterrupted communication among deployed formations, and ensure continuous supervision of security arrangements throughout the pilgrimage.
Special attention was given to traffic regulation and convoy management to facilitate the movement of pilgrims while minimising inconvenience to residents, officials said.
Prabhat also stressed close coordination with the civil administration, health authorities, and disaster response agencies to ensure seamless logistical support, medical assistance, and emergency preparedness.
The annual Amarnath Yatra, which attracts hundreds of thousands of Hindu pilgrims each year, is conducted under one of the country’s largest peacetime security operations because of the region’s challenging terrain and security sensitivities.
Authorities have intensified preparations in recent weeks, with multiple reviews focusing on security, weather monitoring, infrastructure, healthcare, and disaster management ahead of the start of the pilgrimage.
