Some students can’t concentrate completely in classrooms but at coaching centers, they pay full attention.
Nishah: Why do you think students go to coaching institutes in the first place?
Mujtaba: I feel that there are two things in this context. Sometimes there is an incredible push by the parents and they want their child to do the best. Parents sometimes get confused what to do and they feel that going to tuitions is the best way and we have to oblige. Another reason I feel is the pressure that all of us are under. There is so much competition and a mad race that we have to do everything which includes going to tuitions.
Nishah: Do you think coaching makes a student dependent?
Hissan: I don’t think so. Each and every student has his/her own point of view. Some students go to tuition to gain knowledge. But some go to tuitions just to pass the time. Some students can’t concentrate completely in classrooms but at coaching centers, they pay full attention. It’s not about getting dependent on coaching but getting exposure from what is going around. And ultimately it depends on the students.
Nishah: Is it good for the students especially of English medium schools to opt for coaching institutes? Javed Iqbal: At English medium schools teachers are well versed and highly qualified, and I don’t think students studying in such schools need to go to a coaching center. But if need arises to go to a coaching center and students want to learn something that they have not learned in school then might be a good thing. But going to coaching centers unnecessarily, just for fun is not a good thing at all.
Nishah: Do you think that going to private coaching institutes is just a craze these days?
Agha Hani: Yes, I think so, because going to coaching institutes makes students feel trendy. See, there are no proper rules at these institutes, be it about clothes or other things. And I feel that these institutes have become a fashion hub. And yes it has become a craze to attend a coaching institute because when somebody asks have you joined any coaching institutes, we proudly say yes. And we always tend to prefer the best one.
Nishah: Does it take away the self study time of students when they join a coaching institute?
Hazim: Yes, it does. Actually, what happens is that we go to school in the morning and leave at 3 o’ clock. And then we have to go for coaching. There we give another three to four hours and by the time we reach home it’s almost evening. Imagine after 7 pm, with so much exhaustion how will a student be able to do self-study. There should be time for extracurricular activities as well so that things get balanced and everything happens in a systematic way.
Nishah: Does coaching institutes give a boost to students career and a right direction to them?
Javed Iqbal: Above average students, who are able to grasp everything in school should avoid going to coaching institutes while below average students should join the coaching institutes to get the boost in his studies. He/she should not join it just for the sake of fashion or trend but to get the actual benefit. Nishah: How can schools play a role in avoiding students to join coaching institutes?
Mujtaba: In coaching institutes attention is given to each student barring the time constraint. And that is what makes coaching better than school education. If this thing is changed may be students will avoid joining a coaching institute. By this I mean that in schools the teacher to student ratio needs to be improved so that teachers can impart quality education. The education system needs to be improved.
