Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday urged newly appointed civil servants to focus on public service and integrity rather than promotions and postings.
Abdullah distributed appointment orders to 55 candidates selected through the Combined Competitive Examination for the Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service and Jammu and Kashmir Accounts (Gazetted) Service at a function at the SKICC in Srinagar.
The appointments comprise 28 Junior Scale JKAS officers and 27 Accounts Officers.
Addressing the new officers and their families, Abdullah said receiving an appointment order marked the beginning rather than the end of their professional journey.
He urged them to build their careers around competence, honesty and hard work and said public servants were remembered for the difference they made to people’s lives.
“Don’t keep postings and promotions in mind. Just think that you have got a chance which very few people get,” he said.
Abdullah said officers should understand the circumstances behind applications and complaints received by government departments, even when individual grievances were not necessarily justified.
He also asked the officers to prepare for challenges Jammu and Kashmir could face over the next two decades, including improving education, making cities more liveable, addressing climate change and adapting to technologies such as artificial intelligence.
The chief minister said the government would provide support to help the officers carry out their responsibilities.
He urged them to consider how they wanted Jammu and Kashmir to look at the end of their careers and to serve people even when making the right decision was difficult.
Senior government officials, ministers Javid Ahmed Dar and Satish Sharma, and Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani attended the event.
