Five people, including a three-year-old child, died and seven others were injured on Monday when a passenger cab skidded off a road and plunged into a gorge in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, officials said.
The accident occurred near Simari on the Teetwal-Simari road in Karnah, when the vehicle veered off the road and fell towards the Kishanganga River, a senior official said.
Police, rescue teams, and local volunteers rushed to the scene and evacuated the passengers.
Five people were declared dead after being brought to Sub-District Hospital Tangdhar, while the injured were referred to Government Medical College Handwara for further treatment.
The deceased were identified as Muhammad Idrees, 32, Hamza Idrees, 3, Sayeeda Begum, 30, Muhammad Shabir, 55, all residents of Simari, and Muhammad Arshad, 39, of Teetwal.
Six injured passengers were later received at GMC Handwara, officials said.
One was subsequently shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment, while the others remained under observation.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed condolences to the victims’ families and directed officials to ensure medical care for the injured.
Senior district officials visited Simari and the hospital to oversee rescue, relief, and treatment efforts.
