Senior IPS officer Sujit Kumar on Thursday took charge as Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, succeeding Vidhi Kumar Birdi as part of a major Jammu and Kashmir police reshuffle.
Kumar, a 2007-batch AGMUT cadre officer, was transferred from IGP Security and posted as IGP Kashmir Zone against an available vacancy.
Birdi, a 2003-batch officer, had headed the Kashmir police establishment and also held additional charge of IGP Armed Police Kashmir.
Birdi had earlier been cleared for central deputation as Inspector General in the Central Reserve Police Force. His release was held back during the Amarnath Yatra and has now been linked to the vacancy in the Kashmir Zone.
Kumar takes charge as the Valley’s police leadership remains focused on counter-terrorism operations, intelligence coordination and protection of vital installations, according to the source material.
He had served as IGP Security since August 2024 after being promoted to the IGP rank.
In that role, he oversaw security arrangements for protected persons and key installations.
Earlier this month, Security Headquarters granted in-situ promotions to 1028 personnel of different ranks under a process chaired by Kumar.
His previous assignments in J&K included DIG North Kashmir, DIG Central Kashmir with additional charge of South Kashmir, DIG CID Kashmir, DIG Udhampur-Reasi Range and DIG Jammu-Kathua-Samba Range.
He has also served in Ladakh.
In March 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs approved Kumar’s five-year deputation as a DIG in the CRPF, but he was not relieved and continued serving in J&K.
