Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained slow on Sunday despite the road being open for two-way movement, officials said.

Congestion was reported along several stretches, particularly between Nashri and Banihal, where ongoing restoration work and four-laning projects have reduced traffic to single-lane movement at multiple points.

Authorities said bottlenecks were compounded by occasional vehicle breakdowns and the movement of nomadic families with livestock heading towards Kashmir.

Subject to favourable weather, light motor vehicles and heavy vehicles will be allowed to ply in both directions towards Srinagar and Jammu on Monday as well, officials said.

The highway, a key transport lifeline for the region, has faced repeated disruptions over the past week due to adverse weather and landslides. While two-way traffic was restored on Thursday following improved conditions, movement remained sluggish on Sunday, especially across vulnerable stretches.

Traffic officials said the Nashri to Kishtwari Pather stretch was particularly affected due to construction activity and limited road width, slowing both passenger and goods vehicles.

Commuters have been advised to check updates from traffic control units and official police channels before travel, and to prefer daytime journeys due to risks of landslides and shooting stones along the Ramban-Banihal stretch.

Meanwhile, the Kishtwar-Sinthan Top-Anantnag road remains closed following recent heavy snowfall, further impacting regional connectivity.
