The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open to two-way traffic on Thursday, although movement was slow at several vulnerable stretches in Udhampur and Ramban districts, traffic authorities said.
Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and heavy vehicles were being allowed to travel from both Jammu and Srinagar sides, subject to road and weather conditions.
Traffic was particularly slow at Dewal in Udhampur, where vehicles were being regulated through a roughly 40-metre single-lane section because of a damaged and uneven road surface.
In Ramban, movement was also slow along the Maroog-Kishtwari Pather stretch, where traffic was passing through a single-lane section amid highway construction and road damage.
Breakdowns involving several heavy vehicles between Nashri and Banihal had also contributed to temporary congestion and delays.
Authorities advised commuters and transport operators to check the latest highway status before travelling because of the India Meteorological Department’s forecast of rain over the coming days.
Passengers and LMV operators were advised to travel during daylight between Ramban and Banihal and avoid unnecessary night journeys because of the risk of shooting stones, landslides and other weather-related hazards.
Motorists were also advised against unnecessary stops at vulnerable locations and urged to maintain lane discipline and avoid overtaking, driving on the wrong side and other violations that could disrupt regulated traffic flow.
Operators carrying fresh produce, other perishable commodities and livestock were told to follow prescribed loading rules.
Heavy-vehicle operators were advised to avoid overloading, ensure their vehicles were fit for travel and carry sufficient fuel.
Subject to favourable weather and satisfactory road conditions, passenger LMVs, private cars, and heavy goods vehicles were to be allowed to operate in both directions on Thursday.
Authorities urged travellers to remain in contact with traffic control units in Jammu, Ramban and Srinagar and follow official advisories.
