The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir on Friday held a one-day workshop on the application of molecular genetics in wildlife conservation, aimed at strengthening research capacity and awareness among students and professionals in Jammu and Kashmir.

The event, organised by the university’s Division of Wildlife Sciences at its Faculty of Forestry in Benhama, was conducted under the Scientific Social Responsibility component of a research project funded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation, focusing on Asiatic black bears.

Researchers, scientists, academicians and wildlife managers from multiple institutions participated in the workshop, which examined how molecular tools can aid in understanding, managing and protecting wildlife populations in the region.

Organisers said the programme sought to promote the use of advanced genetic techniques in conservation planning, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

Speakers from institutions including the University of Kashmir, the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology and Lovely Professional University delivered lectures on analytical tools and methodologies used in molecular studies.

Faculty members at SKUAST-K said such initiatives are essential to bridge gaps between academic research and field-level conservation efforts, and called for more programmes to build technical expertise in the sector.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks from the organising team.
