Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to people who suffered during the Partition of India, saying their ability to rebuild their lives after violence, displacement and loss demonstrated the resilience of the human spirit.

Marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Modi said Partition had “tore apart several lives”, uprooting families, separating loved ones and forcing millions to endure severe hardship.

At the same time, he said, many survivors rebuilt their lives from nothing and went on to contribute to India’s economic and social progress.

“Their life journeys remind us of the strength of the human spirit,” Modi said in a series of posts on X.

The prime minister said the day should strengthen India’s commitment to communal harmony and brotherhood and encourage people to work collectively towards building a developed India.

He also paid tribute to those who emerged from the trauma of Partition and made significant contributions to the country’s development.

Modi said their courage and determination showed that people could overcome extraordinary adversity.

He quoted a Subhashitam to underline the importance of hard work, enterprise and sustained effort, arguing that human endeavour, rather than reliance on fate, was central to shaping one’s destiny.

He urged citizens to pursue their goals with courage, perseverance and diligence.
