Ruling National Conference will meet its legislators and independent lawmakers supporting the government on Sunday to coordinate its strategy ahead of the Assembly’s autumn session.
NC President Farooq Abdullah will chair the meeting at the Banquet Hall in Srinagar, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the leader of the NC legislature party, also attending.
The meeting will focus on government business and issues expected to be raised by the Opposition, a senior party leader said.
The 10-day session begins on September 21 and has seven sittings. Government business is scheduled for September 21, 22, 29 and 30, while private members’ bills are listed for Sept. 24 and 28 and private members’ resolutions for September 25.
Electricity tariffs are expected to feature prominently after the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission approved an average 6.83 percent tariff increase from September 1, according to the source material. Opposition parties are expected to question the government over the revision.
Employment, recruitment, outsourcing and delivery of public services are also expected to come under scrutiny.
The National Conference had campaigned on a promise of providing 200 units of free electricity to households. Omar has defended the tariff revision, saying it was limited and followed a four-year gap, according to the source.
The government is expected to use the session to defend its decisions and record, while opposition parties prepare to press it on governance and public concerns.
