Kashmir Medical College and Hospital in Sempora on Friday conducted its first laparoscopic cholecystectomy, marking the introduction of minimally invasive gallbladder surgery at the institution, hospital officials said.
The procedure, used to remove a diseased or stone-filled gallbladder through minimally invasive techniques, was carried out by the Department of General and Minimal Access Surgery at the hospital.
The surgical team was led by Sheikh Sajad and included Associate Professor Azhar and Assistant Professor Zahid, along with operating theatre staff.
The anaesthesiology team was headed by Basharat, hospital officials said.
Speaking after the procedure, Sajad described the development as an important step for both the hospital and the healthcare sector in the region.
“We have achieved an important milestone by starting minimally invasive surgeries here, which will greatly benefit patients through faster recovery and better treatment outcomes,” he said.
Hospital officials said the patient was recovering well and had been shifted to the ward after surgery.
Nazir Ahmad Khan, Principal and Dean of the institution, congratulated the surgical team and said the introduction of laparoscopic procedures would improve access to advanced healthcare services in Jammu and Kashmir.
He said patients would no longer need to travel long distances or face extended waiting periods for such surgeries.
“Patients can now avail advanced laparoscopic treatment here with shorter waiting times and better convenience,” Khan said.
