Srinagar, Oct 14

Rain lashed parts of Kashmir for a second consecutive day on Wednesday, while fresh snowfall was reported in higher reaches as a Western Disturbance brought colder conditions to Jammu and Kashmir.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecast light to moderate rain at many places until October 15, with isolated heavy showers, thunderstorms and hailstorms possible. Higher elevations are also likely to receive more snow.

The weather is expected to improve from October 16, with predominantly dry conditions forecast between October 17 and 24, the department said.

Isolated light rain cannot be ruled out on October 16.

Srinagar received 7.3 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to Wednesday, while Gulmarg recorded 16 mm, Kupwara 13.4 mm and Pahalgam 11.8 mm.

Fresh snowfall was reported from Apharwat in Gulmarg, Sonamarg, higher reaches of Pahalgam, the Zojila axis, Tulail in Gurez Valley, Razdan Pass, Sadhna Top, Pir Ki Gali, Sinthan Top and Margan Top.

Temperatures remained low during the day.

Gulmarg recorded a maximum of 8 degrees Celsius, 1.9 degrees below normal, while Srinagar registered 18.2 degrees and Pahalgam 17 degrees.

Qazigund recorded 18.6 degrees Celsius, Kokernag 17.8 degrees and Kupwara 15 degrees. In Jammu division, Jammu city recorded a maximum of 30 degrees, while Banihal registered 22.7 degrees, Batote 23.1, Katra 27.9 and Bhaderwah 23 degrees.

Cloud cover kept night temperatures above normal across Kashmir despite the daytime chill.

Maximum temperatures could fall by another one to two degrees during the wet spell, while minimum temperatures are expected to remain near current levels.

The weather department advised farmers to take precautions during ongoing agricultural operations, particularly paddy harvesting, and ensure the safe storage of harvested apples, paddy, and other crops.

The forecast did not indicate conditions likely to cause major road disruptions or landslides, the department said.

However, travellers were advised to check road conditions before travelling, particularly in snow-affected higher reaches, and wear adequate warm clothing.
