The Centre has approved the appointment of Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the law ministry said.
President Droupadi Murmu appointed Bhati, currently a judge of the Rajasthan High Court, to the post with effect from the date he assumes charge, according to a government notification.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Bhati for the post on August 31.
Bhati was elevated to the Rajasthan High Court in November 2016 after a legal career spanning more than two decades.
He enrolled as an advocate in 1992 and practised extensively before the Rajasthan High Court.
His areas of practice have included service and other writ matters, revenue, elections, mining, education, criminal law and public interest litigation.
Before joining the Bench, Bhati served as Additional Advocate General of Rajasthan and represented several government departments and public institutions.
He also served as standing counsel for Indian Railways for 16 years.
He was a member of the Bar Council of Rajasthan from 2009 to 2015 and held leadership positions in lawyers’ associations of the Rajasthan High Court.
Bhati, born in 1970, holds BA, LLB, and LLM degrees and a doctorate in law focusing on promotion and seniority in public employment.
He has also taught law at Jai Narain Vyas University and the National Law University in Jodhpur.
