The International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir (IFFJK) opened in Srinagar on Monday, with the government seeking to revive the region’s links with the film industry and attract productions to the territory.
Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo said organisers received more than 1100 entries from 80 countries after inviting films for the festival.
Following the selection process, 135 films were shortlisted for screening during the four-day event, including more than 60 foreign films from 40 countries, Dulloo said at the festival’s opening ceremony.
The inaugural ceremony was held at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre, while film screenings began earlier at Inox Srinagar.
Dulloo said the festival could help reconnect Jammu and Kashmir with the international film industry and provide opportunities for local talent in areas including photography, direction, acting, music, lyric writing and technical work.
He invited filmmakers from India and abroad to explore Jammu and Kashmir’s culture, cuisine and heritage and consider the region as a filming destination.
Organisers said the festival would also include discussions, master classes and opportunities for young people to interact with professionals from the film industry.
The event is scheduled to run for four days from September 7.
