Erling Haaland delivered the defining performance of his FIFA World Cup campaign, scoring twice in the closing stages as Norway stunned Brazil 2-1 on Sunday to book a historic place in the quarter-finals for the first time.
For nearly 80 minutes at New York New Jersey Stadium, Brazil dominated possession, created the better chances and repeatedly tested Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland. But the veteran keeper stood firm, and Haaland did what elite strikers do best—turning limited opportunities into decisive moments.
The breakthrough arrived in the 79th minute after a slick Norwegian passing move. Substitute Andreas Schjelderup burst down the left flank and floated a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, where Haaland powered a downward header beyond Alisson to silence the Brazilian supporters.
The Manchester City striker wasn’t finished.
Moments before the end of regulation, Haaland collected the ball inside the area and calmly threaded his finish through Danilo’s legs and past Alisson to double Norway’s advantage, sending the Scandinavian fans into celebration.
Brazil finally found the scoresheet deep into stoppage time when Neymar converted a penalty in the 10th minute of added time, but it proved to be nothing more than a late consolation as the five-time champions suffered their earliest World Cup exit since 1990.
The result sends Norway into uncharted territory. Ståle Solbakken’s side will face either England or Mexico in the quarter-finals in Miami on July 11, now just two victories away from an improbable World Cup final appearance.
Nyland’s brilliance laid the foundation for the upset. The 35-year-old goalkeeper denied Bruno Guimarães from the penalty spot after Kristoffer Ajer was penalized for fouling Matheus Cunha following a VAR review. He then produced a string of outstanding saves, frustrating Gabriel Martinelli, Vinícius Júnior, Rayan and Guimarães to keep Brazil scoreless for nearly the entire contest.
Brazil also squandered a golden chance early in the second half when substitute Endrick raced clear after a superb pass from Vinícius Júnior but miscontrolled the ball before dragging his effort off target.
Haaland’s clinical finishing ensured those missed opportunities proved costly.
The brace took the Norwegian striker to seven goals in just four matches at the tournament, drawing him level with Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. It also extended his remarkable scoring streak to 14 consecutive competitive matches for Norway, during which he has netted 27 goals. Overall, Haaland now has 62 international goals in 54 appearances.
Named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match, Haaland struggled to contain his emotions after Norway’s landmark victory.
“It’s absolutely mad,” he said. “If I get a chance or two, it usually ends up as a goal. I don’t know how I do it, but that’s how I do it. It’s a gift from God that it goes in perfectly.”
Norway coach Ståle Solbakken praised his team’s disciplined approach against one of football’s traditional powers.
“We played a solid, tactical game,” Solbakken said. “We should be damn proud of that.”
For Brazil, it was another painful chapter in a tournament history filled with lofty expectations. For Norway, led by a prolific Haaland and inspired by Nyland’s heroics, it was the greatest World Cup victory the nation has ever celebrated.
