Security forces heard gunshots during a search operation in the upper reaches of the Yusmarg area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Thursday evening, officials said.
The operation was launched by a joint team of the Army and police following intelligence inputs, the officials said.
The area where the operation was taking place is remote and lies near the boundary between Budgam and Poonch districts, according to officials.
Security forces heard gunfire while conducting searches and subsequently tightened the cordon around the area, they said.
The search operation was continuing when the latest reports were received.
There was no immediate information on the source of the gunfire, whether anyone had been injured or whether any contact with militants had taken place.
