Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary has questioned whether the Centre’s decision to revoke the region’s special status had succeeded in ending militancy, following the killing of two migrant workers in Kulgam.
Choudhary said the Centre had abrogated Article 370 and reorganised Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories with the stated aim of ending terrorism, but militant violence continued.
He called for a high-level inquiry into recent killings and questioned why attacks were occurring despite heightened security during the Amarnath pilgrimage and ahead of Independence Day.
The deputy chief minister also linked what he described as a recent increase in violence to a National Conference protest seeking restoration of statehood in Delhi on July 20, without providing evidence for the connection.
He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir were tired of repeated killings and called for an end to the cycle of violence.
Choudhary urged the prime minister and home minister to establish a committee to investigate the killings and identify those responsible.
