Congress will raise public concerns in Jammu and Kashmir’s legislative assembly despite its alliance with the ruling National Conference, party chief Tariq Hameed Karra said on Sunday.
“We are in alliance with the National Conference, but that does not mean we will not raise public issues,” Karra told reporters after a meeting of Congress legislators ahead of the Assembly’s autumn session.
He said the purpose of the Assembly was to raise questions and seek action on issues affecting people, regardless of whether they were raised by ruling party members or the Opposition.
Karra said Congress lawmakers had discussed issues to be taken up during the session.
Asked about differences between Congress and the National Conference over issues including Vande Mataram and UPI, he said the disagreements should be viewed in the wider context of their alliance.
“We are on a principled stand. We took that alliance as a principled stand, keeping in mind the larger picture,” he said.
Karra said the alliance would not prevent Congress from raising legitimate public demands.
The Assembly’s seven-sitting autumn session begins on Sept. 21 and continues until Sept. 30. The opening sitting will include obituary references followed by Question Hour.
