A senior Jammu and Kashmir official on Tuesday called for stricter action against drug trafficking and greater community participation to tackle substance abuse, as part of a 100-day anti-drug campaign in the region.
Piyush Singla, who is also the district mentor for the campaign in Shopian, chaired an awareness programme at the Mini Secretariat, where multiple government departments set up stalls to highlight welfare schemes, skill development initiatives and employment opportunities for youth.
Singla directed officials to strengthen efforts to combat drug abuse by improving access to vocational training, counselling and rehabilitation support, with a focus on reintegrating affected individuals into society.
He warned of the social and economic consequences of addiction and said a coordinated response involving families, educational institutions and communities was essential.
“The fight against drug abuse cannot be undertaken by the government alone,” he said, urging young people to pursue constructive paths and calling on parents to remain vigilant.
Deputy Commissioner Shishir Gupta said sustained efforts were underway across the district under the campaign and encouraged residents to share information about those affected by substance abuse to enable timely intervention and treatment.
Officials said the initiative also promotes self-employment as a pathway to recovery and social reintegration.
Cultural performances were held as part of the programme to raise awareness.
