Ali Mohammad Sagar, a senior National Conference (NC) leader and seven-time legislator from Srinagar’s Khanyar constituency, has returned to the cabinet after a political career spanning more than four decades.
Sagar, who holds an LLB from the University of Kashmir, first entered the Legislative Assembly in 1983.
He was re-elected from Khanyar in 1987, 1996, 2002, 2008, and 2014, and won the seat again in the 2024 Assembly election.
In the 2024 election, Sagar received 14,906 votes, defeating independent candidate Sheikh Imran, who polled 4994, by 9912 votes.
He has held senior organisational roles in the NC and is often described as the party’s “crisis manager”.
In June 2014, he was appointed the party’s general secretary, succeeding Sheikh Nazir, who had held the post since 1996.
Sagar previously served in an NC-led government, holding the Works and Rural Development and Panchayati Raj portfolios.
