A woman was injured after being attacked by a wild bear in the Gund Aku area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday, officials said.

The injured woman was identified as Zahida Begum, 32, wife of Mumtaz Ahmad Chechi and of Gund Aku.

Officials said the woman was attacked by the bear in a nearby forest area, sustaining injuries in the incident.

She was initially taken to a primary health centre in Gund for treatment before being referred to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Soura, Srinagar, for specialised medical care due to the nature of her injuries.

The incident has renewed concerns among local residents over increasing cases of human-wildlife conflict in forest-adjacent areas of Kashmir in recent years.
