A 27-year-old doctor from Jammu died after falling into a deep gorge in the Bhalessa area of Doda district, officials said on Tuesday.

Police said they received information about a man lying in a gorge around 250 feet deep near Dilmera village along the Gundoh-Jai road.

The deceased was identified as Prabhjot Chalotra of the Bahu Fort area of Jammu.

Rescue teams comprising police personnel and local volunteers reached the site and retrieved the body, which was later taken to a hospital in Gundoh, where he was declared dead.

Preliminary investigations suggest the incident occurred on Monday night. 

Officials said Chalotra, who had been staying in the area with a friend, had stopped near Dilmera village while returning from Gundoh in a light motor vehicle.

He is believed to have slipped and fallen into the gorge while getting out of the vehicle, they said.

A magistrate said a post-mortem examination was conducted and the body was handed over to the family after completion of legal formalities.

Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
