Ramban, April 28
Traffic resumed in both directions on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on Tuesday, though movement remained slow along some stretches after fresh rain in parts of Ramban district, officials said.
Authorities said Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and heavy vehicles were allowed to ply from both Srinagar and Jammu sides, with the highway expected to remain open for two-way traffic on Wednesday as well, subject to weather and road conditions.
However, congestion was reported between Marog and Kishtwari Pather, where traffic is restricted to a single lane. Officials attributed delays to the breakdown of heavy vehicles and the movement of nomadic herds along the route.
Two stranded heavy vehicles and several herds further slowed traffic in the affected stretch, they said.
Officials advised commuters, particularly drivers of light motor vehicles, to travel during daylight hours only, citing risks of landslides, shooting stones and ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal.
Passengers were urged to follow lane discipline and avoid overtaking, warning that violations could worsen congestion.
Traffic control units in Jammu, Ramban and Srinagar were monitoring the situation and providing updates on road status and movement timings.
Separately, authorities said only light motor vehicles and private passenger vehicles would be allowed on the Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag road, subject to weather conditions, with movement restricted to designated hours.
Restrictions on the movement of goods carriers will also be imposed on May 1 and May 3 to facilitate travel of government employees between Jammu and Srinagar, officials added.
