Authorities have identified 74 accident-prone black corridors across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while official data showed that more than 1,350 people were killed in road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir between 2020 and 2024.

The figures were provided by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in response to questions in parliament.

Of the 74 identified black corridors, 73 are in Jammu and Kashmir and one in Kargil district of Ladakh.

Jammu district has the highest number, with 30 such high-risk stretches, followed by Samba with 14 and Kathua with 13. Reasi and Udhampur each have four, Srinagar three, Rajouri two and Baramulla and Kulgam one each. Another corridor lies between Jammu and Samba.

Jammu and Kashmir recorded 10,251 road accidents during the five years, resulting in 1350 deaths and injuries to 10,690 people.

The number of fatalities stood at 258 in 2020, 268 in 2021, 259 in 2022, 294 in 2023, and 271 in 2024.

The data highlights the continuing road-safety challenge in the mountainous region, where steep terrain, extreme weather and vulnerable highway stretches frequently contribute to accidents and disruptions.
