Two inmates facing trial under India’s child sexual offences law escaped from the high-security Central Jail Srinagar, prompting a search operation and a police case, authorities said on Sunday.
The inmates were identified as Farman Khan of Rajasthan and Mukhtar Ahmed Gujar of Anantnag district.
Khan was facing trial in a case registered under Sections 3 and 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, while Gujar was facing trial under the same provisions in a separate case.
Jail authorities said the two escaped after scaling the front-side wall of the prison.
An alert was issued and security was strengthened at the jail and surrounding areas as police teams searched possible hideouts and transit points.
Authorities also alerted neighbouring districts as the investigation into the circumstances of the escape continued.
Kashmir Zone police said on X that a reward would be given for information leading to the location of the escaped inmates.
