Around 145 government degree colleges in Jammu and Kashmir produce 25,000-30,000 graduates annually, the government told the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.
The Higher Education Department, however, said it had no consolidated course-wise data on graduate employability, placement rates, salaries or sector-wise absorption.
The government said employment outcomes varied by course and institution and were influenced by further education, competitive examinations, skills and job opportunities.
It said colleges were using placement calls, career counselling and institutional tracking, while efforts were under way to strengthen alumni and employment-outcome tracking under NEP-2020.
Government data also showed declining enrolment in several subjects, including Electronics and English Literature, with some courses discontinued.
A committee constituted to rationalise subjects has recommended reviewing enrolment across colleges and adopting cluster-based academic models.
It has also proposed new programmes in areas including artificial intelligence, data science, cyber security and remote sensing at selected colleges.
