First-year admissions in Jammu and Kashmir’s higher education institutions rose 18% this year despite difficulties in operationalising newly established degree colleges, Education Minister Sakina Itoo told the Assembly.
Itoo said land disputes identified for permanent campuses were delaying construction of college buildings in some areas.
She urged legislators to help resolve local disputes, saying funds were available for construction once land issues were settled.
The minister also said several new colleges were struggling to attract students, with many continuing to prefer established “legacy colleges”.
She said the government was introducing employment-oriented subjects, including tourism, music and horticulture, but would align courses and faculty requirements with student demand.
“We don’t want the same old subjects to be taught. New subjects should be introduced,” Itoo said.
