Police on Monday seized 135 kg of cheese at Jammu Bus Stand over alleged violation of standard operating procedures related to its transportation and handed over the case to the Food Safety Department for further action under Food Safety and Standards Authority of India norms.
Station House Officer Jammu Bus Stand, Inderpal Singh, said the consignment was retained after officials found violations in the prescribed transportation procedure.
“It was retained for SOP violation while transporting the consignment. Then we called the designated official of the Food Safety Department following FSSAI norms. They lifted the samples and initiated prosecution proceedings against the business operator whose consignment was seized,” he said.
He said further action would be taken after the laboratory testing report is received.
When asked whether the seized consignment was adulterated, the officer said it could not be confirmed at this stage.
“It cannot be said till the report of the sample is received. In any case, the matter has been handed over to the designated official for further action as per FSSAI norms,” he said.
Officials from the Food Safety Department said the paneer consignment, accompanied by proper billing documents, had been received by local vendors from Gurdaspur.
A Food Safety Department official said samples from the consignment have been sent for laboratory examination to determine whether the product meets prescribed food safety standards.
Authorities said further action in the case will depend on the outcome of the sample testing report.
