Srinagar, Aug 17
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor is due to visit Kashmir on Wednesday, his first trip to Jammu and Kashmir since taking charge as Washington’s envoy to India, according to officials familiar with his itinerary.
Gor is expected to arrive in Srinagar on Wednesday afternoon and meet Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the officials said.
He is expected to stay overnight in Srinagar before travelling to Ladakh on Thursday.
The visit comes as India and the United States seek to deepen cooperation across defence, trade, technology, critical minerals, and counter-terrorism, while also working to expand cooperation against narcotics trafficking.
Gor presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu on January 14, 2026, formally becoming the 27th US ambassador to India.
He also serves as the US special envoy for South and Central Asia.
Since arriving in New Delhi, Gor has held talks with senior Indian officials, including Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, as Washington and New Delhi have sought to broaden their strategic relationship.
His Kashmir visit is expected to provide an opportunity for discussions on the security situation in the region, economic and development issues and broader India-US relations, although officials have not publicly disclosed the agenda of his meetings.
Gor, a political associate of US President Donald Trump, previously served in the White House as assistant to the president and director of presidential personnel.
Before joining the Trump administration, he co-founded a publishing company with Donald Trump Jr. and was involved in US political and legislative affairs.
The ambassador’s visit comes against the backdrop of continuing efforts by India and the United States to strengthen cooperation in the wider South and Central Asian region.
Security arrangements are expected to be tightened during Gor’s movement through Srinagar, officials said.
Further details of his programme and the issues discussed with J&K’s political leadership are expected to emerge after the visit.
