Union cabinet on Wednesday adopted a resolution congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he became the country’s longest-serving elected prime minister, surpassing the continuous tenure record held by Jawaharlal Nehru.
Modi completed 4399 consecutive days in office as an elected prime minister, overtaking Nehru’s record of 4398 days served between 1952 and 1964.
The cabinet resolution described the milestone as a reflection of public trust in Modi’s leadership and coinciding with the completion of 12 years of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) rule under him.
The resolution highlighted a range of government initiatives and reforms undertaken during Modi’s tenure, including welfare programmes, infrastructure development, economic reforms, national security measures and India’s growing international profile.
It cited programmes aimed at providing housing, electricity, drinking water and welfare benefits to low-income households, while also highlighting initiatives focused on women, farmers, youth and entrepreneurs.
The cabinet also referred to major policy decisions taken under Modi’s leadership, including the abrogation of Article 370, implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), introduction of new criminal laws and measures aimed at boosting manufacturing and self-reliance.
The resolution expressed confidence that India would continue its efforts toward becoming a developed nation by 2047 under Modi’s leadership.
Speaking at an NDA gathering in New Delhi, Modi said voters had come to appreciate the importance of political stability and decisive governance.
“People of the country have understood the importance of political stability at the national level,” Modi said.
He said the goal of building a developed India, or “Viksit Bharat”, had become a national aspiration rather than the agenda of any individual or political party.
Modi also said the NDA government had strengthened public confidence since coming to power in 2014.
President Droupadi Murmu congratulated Modi, saying the milestone reflected the trust placed in him by the people of India.
“Your tenure has been distinguished by far-reaching advancements across governance, economic resilience and social transformation,” Murmu wrote on social media.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated Modi, describing his leadership as a period marked by economic development, national security initiatives and efforts to strengthen India’s global standing.
Congratulatory messages also poured in from foreign leaders, including the heads of government and state of Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Nigeria, the Maldives, Kenya, South Korea, Italy, Denmark, Cyprus, Greece, Germany, Fiji, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Canada, Spain and Japan.
Several leaders praised Modi’s longevity in office, highlighted bilateral relations with India and expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with New Delhi.
Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, following the BJP-led NDA’s victory in the general election. He has since won three consecutive national mandates and now holds the record for the longest uninterrupted tenure by an elected prime minister in India’s history.
