The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open to regulated traffic on Thursday despite fresh monsoon rain, although commuters continued to face long delays across damaged stretches undergoing repairs, officials said.
Authorities allowed two-way movement of light motor vehicles while heavy vehicles were permitted to travel towards Kashmir according to a traffic management schedule. Convoys carrying pilgrims for the annual Amarnath Yatra also continued to use the highway.
Officials said rain had turned the damaged Dewal stretch in Udhampur district muddy and slippery, slowing traffic as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and traffic police carried out continuous repair work and regulated vehicle movement.
Motorists were advised to travel only during daylight hours because of the risk of landslides, shooting stones and ongoing highway widening works. Authorities also issued alternative route advisories for commuters travelling towards Srinagar and the Chenab Valley region.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Raja Adil Hameed said the highway remained operational under close coordination between the traffic police and the NHAI to ensure safe movement through vulnerable sections.
